- Cold-start rattle is the M274 tell: tensioner bleed-down plus worn cam-adjuster lock pins. Chains trend toward ~80k wear items — chase the noise early.
- P0016 'implausible' codes on this engine can be the tone ring slipping on the camshaft — needs a cam, not a sensor. Proper diagnosis saves a parts cannon.
- Plugs wear fast on this DI turbo four; misfires under load by 30–40k are common. Keep the interval short.
- The 9G-Tronic runs MB 236.17 only and checks level by the overflow method at a set temp — this one's worth paying a shop that does it right.
