- A one-two-second rattle on cold start is the M274's calling card: the chain tensioner bleeds down and adjusters with worn lock pins join in. Don't sit on it; chains here are ~80k wear items.
- P0016 'camshaft implausible' on an M274 can be the tone ring slipping on the cam — that's a camshaft, not a sensor. Diagnose before throwing parts.
- Plugs age fast on this direct-injection four — misfires under boost around 30–40k are common enough that many techs shortened the interval.
- 2019+ cars run the 9-speed: 236.17 fluid only, and it's not a lifetime fill — plan a service by 5 years.
