Great chassis, picky FSI — check the cam follower before it checks your camshaft.

🔧 Mechanic's Notes
- The HPFP cam follower is THE B7 2.0T job: it's a wear item that grinds through, and once it does you're buying an intake camshaft and a fuel pump, not a $30 puck. Pull and inspect it every 20–30k miles (ShopDAP/ECS both document this).
- Direct injection means nothing washes the intake valves — carbon builds up and shows as cold-start misfires that smooth out warm. Plan a walnut blast around 60–80k miles.
- FWD cars carry the multitronic CVT (01J) — fragile if the fluid's never been done. On a used buy, check for judder and codes before money changes hands; the quattro Tiptronic is the safer gearbox.
- BPG (2005.5–06) and BWT (2007–08) are near-twins, but always confirm the engine code on the sticker before ordering parts.
Field patterns from a working mechanic — diagnose your own car before buying parts.
