🔧 Mechanic's Notes
- 2009–2011 CAEB engines are the class-action oil-consumption cars — thin piston rings. On any B8 buy, do an oil consumption test or look for ring/piston repair receipts; a quart every 1,000 miles is the bad pattern (Autoblog/CarBuzz, MotorReviewer).
- Pre-revision timing chain tensioners can let go — a rattle for a second on cold start is your warning. Updated tensioner is cheap insurance next to a jumped chain and bent valves.
- FWD cars got the multitronic CVT (0AW): judder from a stop, input-shaft bearing wear and valve-body faults are the known failure modes (P1890/P1740). Service it every ~40k and buy quattro if you have the choice.
- Direct injection = intake-valve carbon. Cold misfires and soft low-end on a higher-mile car usually mean it's walnut-blast time.
